Chatkhil is located at . It has 33,832 household units and a total area 133.89 km2.
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census,Chatkhil has a population of 194185. Males constitute are 48.43% of the population, and females 51.57%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 90484. Chatkhil has an average literacy rate of 52.1% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate. Chatkhil (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 6.07 km2 and population 28817; male 48.45%, female 51.55%. It has 9 wards and 18 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 54.8%.[1]
Chatkhil thana was established in 1977 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila has 9 unions/wards, 116 mauzas, and 136 villages. Population 194185; male 48.43%, female 51.57%; Muslim 96.23%, Hindu 3.75% and others 0.02%. The hub of the upazila is vimpur village which is actually holding most part of chatkhil bazar and all the administration office of chatkhil upazila.
